Meteora, the sacred rocks and their history

As you round a bend at this extreme western tip of the plain of Thessaly, twenty four rocky peaks come into sight, like fingers pointing to the sky. The Monasteries of Meteora defy all notions of time. From their summits you can contemplate pages of history: 600 years ago, Byzantine monks settled here to enjoy serenity and solitude, and get closer to God. For information: ? Day excursion

The Gentle Island of Evia

Excursion may be pre-booked. This is a good family excursion. The second largest Greek island after Crete, the coast of Evia offers fabulous opportunities for exploring. Opposite Attica and Beotia, sail through the gulf of the Island of Evia to the village of St George (Aghios Yorgos). Take the time to stroll through the streets of this little fishing village. A motorboat will take you along the wild coastline where you can admire the fabulous colours of the sea on the way to the little island of Monolia. The legends of the island will fire your imagination! You’ll have the chance to swim, while some typical Greek refreshments will be served on this small, heavenly beach. For information: ? Excursion may be pre-booked. The cradle of European culture, Athens is a living illustration of the civilisations, myths and religions that flourished in Greece for over a thousand years. Enjoy a panoramic tour, it will take you through the history – past and present – of this city of eternal values. You’ll admire the sacred hill of the Acropolis – the most important historic site in the western world – crowned by the Parthenon, the largest marble temple ever built in Greece. After lunch at the foot of the Acropolis you may wander through the lively Plaka district, while Monastiraki is good for shopping and Kolonaki has elegant bars and restaurants. Thermopylae, the battle of the 300

Duration: 1 half day
This is a good family excursion. The Battle of Thermopylae enables you to travel back in time. In a magical site, experience a key event in the history of the Mediterranean. On 11 August in the year 480 BC, a heroic gesture and sacrifices enabled the Hellenic army to reorganize its strategy. Leonidas subsequently won battles, thus stopping the Persians from imposing their culture in the Mediterranean. The Mysteries of the oracle of Delphi

According to legend, two eagles set off from the opposite ends of the earth and met here, in the center. Perched like an eagel’s nest above a steep ravine, Delphi welcomed pilgrims who came to consult its oracle, reputed to express the words of Apollo. You’ll travel througn a vast expanse of olive trees to Apollo’s sanctuary, and admire the gracious sanctuary of Athena – the most remarkable monument in Delphi – and the fabulous contents of the museum.
